New hotel classification for Dominican Republic
As the Dominican Republic continually strives to improve its tourism industry, the government has announced a new project to classify the hundreds of hotels and resorts across the Caribbean island.
According to newspaper Dominican Today, tourism minister Felix Jimenez explained that the National Hotels Classification System (SNCH) would establish quality standards for the country's resorts and provide international visitors with valuable information for their stay.
Although a similar scheme was completed in 1991, Mr Jimenez revealed that the SNCH would apply to a wider selection of lodgings. The programme was announced to coincide with the release of glowing figures on the state of the Dominican Republic's tourist industry.
Official figures have revealed that tourist arrivals to the country grew by 5.3 per cent in January compared to the same period last year, while Punta Cana International Airport was found to be the country's busiest terminal, with 53 per cent of all passenger traffic.
The Dominican Republic has boosted its popularity among holidaymakers in recent years with the establishment of a number of high-quality casino resorts. There are more than 20 hotel-casinos in the capital of Santo Domingo, operated by leading international companies.
